FORSYTH, Ill. (WAND) — A group of local volunteers are making their way through Central Illinois with the help of some wood, some screws and a whole lot of hands.Â
"We started this, about a year ago..." said Bruce White, Lead Builder. An idea to help make homes more accessible, has quickly turned into a reality.Â
Ron Grider is the Co-Chairman for Argenta in Motion, an organization traveling to homes to build ADA compliant ramps. Grider, White, and the rest of their team of twenty spends their mornings sawing wood and drilling nails, for people they have never met.
"It's very satisfying to put a ramp up for somebody and know that they are going to be able to get in and out of the house a lot easier," Grider said.
Each ramp is built carefully, and handcrafted based on the structure of the home. The slopes are measured, and handrails are installed.
Argenta in Motion is made up, entirely, of volunteers.
"We had people come out of the woodwork and say, we want to be a part of your group! We've got time to donate and skills to donate..." White added.
Although this group may never meet the homeowner they are building a ramp for, they know what a few planks of wood can do for someone looking to get out of their home safely.
"I have a very simple philosophy..." stated White. "If everybody in the world gave back just 1%, in a year's time the world be a percent better. We're just here trying to give back our 1%."
