SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — History is coming in for a landing!
A fully restored 1929 Ford Tri-Motor aircraft is set to take off at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, offering a rare chance for the public to experience a flight in one of aviation’s earliest passenger airliners.
The event, hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), will take place Friday through Sunday and includes community rides aboard the iconic "Tin Goose," as the Tri-Motor is known as.
Originally built by the Ford Motor Company, the Tri-Motor helped pioneer commercial air travel in the United States. With its metal skin and three roaring engines, this plane provides a living glimpse into aviation’s Golden Age.
"It was used for barnstorming, it has starred in a couple of movies, it has been used for fire jumping to fight forest fires. Even weddings have occurred on flight!" shared John Salz, Springfield EAA President.
Flights will depart from Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, giving riders a scenic aerial view of the Springfield area while immersing them in the thrill of 1920s aviation. Pilots and crew will also be on hand to answer questions and share the story and history of the aircraft. Refreshments will also be available.
Santz added with a smile, "It's an experience you don't get every day!"
Tickets can be purchased through the EAA or at the airport during the event.
