URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - A 2-month-old baby has died after a four-vehicle crash in Urbana.Â
On Thursday, March 13 at approximately 5:52 PM, Urbana police responded to a four-car crash at the intersection of Philo Road and Colorado Avenue.Â
A 2-month-old baby was rushed to Carle Foundation Hospital with serious injuries.
Police said a GMC Envoy driven by Champaign resident was traveling eastbound on Colorado Avenue and failed to stop at the stop intersection. The vehicle clipped a Subaru Outback, which was driving northbound and turning westbound in the intersection.
The GMC then struck a Chrysler Pacifica that was traveling northbound on Philo Road. The point of impact on the Chrysler was directly in the middle of the vehicle's driver side sliding door, causing serious injuries to the 2-month-old, who was seated in a car seat inside of the Chrysler.
The GMC flipped over, slid and hit a Chevy Equinox that was traveling westbound, on Colorado Avenue approaching the intersection at Philo Road.
Two siblings of the 2-month-old, along with their mother who was driving the Chrysler, were all transported to Carle Foundation Hospital where they were treated and released.
The driver of the GMC was also transported to Carle for her injuries and was issued two citations for disobeying a Stop Sign and operating an uninsured Motor Vehicle. Operation of an uninsured motor vehicle where bodily harm occurs is a class A misdemeanor.
The 2-month-old was transferred to St. Louis Children’s Hospital and later passed away.Â
Office of the Medical Examiner in St. Louis, MO is investigating the manner of death.
This is an ongoing investigation being handled by the Criminal Investigations Division.
