SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - $3 million is what officials hope to get from a buyer for the Benedictine University's Springfield campus property.

President Michael Brophy said he hopes the grounds would be used for educational purposes.

A community engagement forum was held to inform the public about the progress of the sale and get input on use for the space.

Benedictine closed the campus at 1500 N. Fifth St. earlier this year.

Jones Lang La Salle Americas has been hired to handle the sale.

A website has been set up to inform buyers about the property.

A potential local buyer is interested in bringing a charter school, a north-end Lincoln Library branch, a day care, housing for veterans and event space to the land.

The person is remaining anonymous at this time.

The campus has millions in deferred maintenance costs. However, the Brinkerhoff House is on the National Register of Historic Places and qualifies for federal historic tax credits.

The entire campus may actually qualify.

Tax credits usually cover about 20 percent of the cost.

Developers could also access TIF funds distributed by the city, because campus sits in the Peoria Road tax increment financing district.
