SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) —The Sangamon County Coroner has identified the 45-year-old man who was shot and killed Thursday morning in Springfield.Â
According to the Coroner, Sammie Tyrone McClinton of Springfield was pronounced deceased by hospital staff shortly after his arrival at 12:03 p.m. Thursday, July 25.Â
The death remains under investigation by the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner.
Police found the victim on the ground with several gunshot wounds in the 700 block of N. 5th St around 11:30 a.m. McClinton was rushed to HSHS St. John’s Hospital.
According to Springfield PD, at approximately 1:00 p.m. Thursday, detectives located the suspect in the 2700 block of S. MacArthur and he was taken into custody without incident.
Shelton A. Woolridge, 27, of Springfield was arrested and taken to the Sangamon County Jail.
Police report the firearm used in the homicide has been recovered by detectives.
Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser charged Woolridge with three counts of first degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.
Woolridge will be in court at 2:00 p.m. today for a first appearance and a petition to detain hearing.
