6 displaced after apartment fire in Mattoon

MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) - 6 adults have been displaced after a fire in Mattoon, Tuesday morning.

According to the Mattoon Fire Department firefighters were called to a fire in the area of 20th and Champaign around 10 a.m. Fire crews arrived on scene and found a garage behind a residence in the 400 block of N. 20th with heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure.

Fire crews were informed that the garage had been converted into an apartment, and the resident was able to exit safely, suffering no injuries. The fire was brought under control in less than 10 minutes. 

Firefighters said that 6 adults were displaced due to the fire, as electricity had to be shut off because several code violations were found in the apartments.

One firefighter suffered a minor hand injury while fighting this fire. The firefighter was treated and released from the hospital.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
