DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — An air ambulance company has set up operations at the Decatur Airport.

Air Evac 182 has taken space previously used by the Decatur Fire Department. It will provide helicopter flights to hospitals for critically ill or injured individuals.

Program Director Megan Kelly said the service will be able to transport patients to hospitals in Springfield and St. Louis if Decatur’s two hospitals can’t provide the needed services. Those will include burn and stroke centers along with Level One Trauma Centers. Decatur does have a Level 2 Trauma Center.

Air Evac 182 will have 13 people working out of the Decatur Airport. Four pilots, four nurses, four medics and a mechanic. The company also has helicopters in Mattoon and Effingham.
