ARCOLA, Ill. (WAND) — Downtown Arcola in Douglas County should have a fresher look by the end of the summer.

Sidewalk replacement work in downtown Arcola

Sidewalk and sewer replacement work is underway in downtown Arcola on April 18, 2025.

The city of 2,927 already has a quaint picturesque downtown and will now see improvements thanks to a $1.3 million state grant.

Work began recently to replace sewers and drainage. Sidewalks and ADA access to those walkways are also being improved.

In a separate project the new downtown Broomcorn Palace is nearing completion. $900,000 was raised to pay for the structure.

Mayor Jesus Garza told WAND News he hopes work on the projects will be completed by the time the Broomcorn Festival takes place in September.
