A spooky, historic treasure in Coles County needs your help! At the end of January, violent storms damaged the roof on the Ashmore Estates. The building once operated as a private psychiatric care facility. Years after being abandoned, the site re-opened as a commercial haunted house in mid October of 2006. Now, the building is unusable again, and the Ashmore community is doing all they can to save Ashmore Estates. Ashmore Estates owners Robert Burton and Ella Richards say the building is important for the surrounding communities, and they plan on keeping Ashmore Estates alive for generations to come. A fundraiser was held all day Saturday at Ashmore Estates in order to raise money to repair the storm-damaged roof. The owners say that their goal is to get the building up and running by winter. However, even if the roof isn't fixed by Halloween, Burton says he still plans on opening Ashmore Estates for a good haunt.
