CHATHAM, Ill. (WAND) — Footage released by the Chatham Police Department showed a close call between an officer and an oncoming car.
The department posted on social media that Sergeant Andrew Thompson was nearly hit while on a DUI stop on State Route 4 near Woodside Road. The car did not slow down or move over for the officer standing near flashing lights.
"This is how scary it is from our perspective, when we’re just trying to do our job on the side of the road and then passing motorists decide to put us in grave danger by not moving over into the other lane when they not only could, but should," read part of the post.
The post had a timely reminder of Scott's Law, as that same evening a memorial procession was held in Urbana for a tow truck operator who was killed by a driver who did not follow the move over law.
Illinois law requires drivers slow down and move over for vehicles with emergency lights on.
