CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup resigned from his position on Dec. 1.
No reason was provided for the resignation.
According to the Champaign County Republican Party, Northrup served for more than 22 years as coroner.
The county GOP will begin accepting applications from those interested in being nominated to serve Northrup's remaining term, ending Nov. 30 2024.
Applicants must live within the boundaries of Champaign County.
Anyone interested can request an application from info@champaign.gop. Applications will be due by Friday, Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. The elected Precinct Committeepersons of the Champaign County Republican Party will make this selection.
The Champaign County Republican Party will host a Special Meeting of Precinct Committeepersons on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, 2 p.m., at Hensley Township Building 3001 W, Hensley Rd., Champaign, IL 61822 to select the party’s nominee for the vacant position.
Applicants will be able to speak and answer questions in front of the voting committee. Voting will follow this Q&A period. The nominee will then be forwarded to the Champaign County Board Chairperson to be voted on and confirmed by the full Champaign County Board at their regular meeting on Jan. 18, 2024.
The appointed coroner's term will begin immediately upon confirmation.
