SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A Chatham woman has been sentenced to 13 years behind bars for her role in a deadly home invasion in 2018.

Springfield police said that, in the early morning hours of February 23, 2018, Katherine Smith of Chatham and a co-defendant, Dayne Woods, forced their way through the back door of Dohndre Hughes’ home in the 1900 block E. Jackson Street in Springfield.

Once inside they yelled “Police!” and ordered Hughes and another person to the ground. When Hughes did not comply, Woods stabbed him in the chest, took money, and ran away. Hughes died from his injury.

Smith pleaded guilty to a home invasion charge in April. Armed robbery and murder charges against her were dropped.

Woods was convicted of first-degree murder, home invasion, armed robbery, and theft after a Sangamon County jury returned a guilty verdict against him on June 26, 2024. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison.
