CHRISTIAN COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - The Christian County Health Department reports they have recorded their first West Nile Virus positive mosquito sample of the 2024 season.
Christian County is the 19th county in Illinois to report a positive West Nile Virus sample.
The mosquitoes were collected on June 24 in the North Taylorville area. Environmental Health staff conducted the confirmatory test on the mosquitoes at the health department.
According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, a county is considered positive for West Nile Virus when a mosquito, bird, horse, or human tests positive for the virus.
IDPH said there have been no human cases of West Nile Virus in the state in the 2024 season.
The recent warm, humid temperatures create an ideal environment for mosquito populations. Dr. Chad Anderson, Public Health Administrator, said the best way to protect yourself is to wear protective clothing, reduce mosquito breeding sites and limit your time outdoors. “During this time of year dawn and dusk are the times people like to be outdoors, to beat the heat.” Anderson said, “this is the time of day mosquitoes are most active. If you are going to be outside during these times, use EPA registered mosquito repellent to protect yourself.”
The Christian County Health Department will continue to monitor and test mosquitoes for West Nile Virus.
