Closed temporarily; Car crashes into Secretary of State's office

MONTICELLO, Ill. (WAND)- The Secretary of State's office in Monticello suffered severe damage after a car crashed into the building, Sunday afternoon.

According to the Monticello Police Department, officers responded to the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State located at 1205 Bear Ln., Sunday afternoon around 1:26 pm.

The initial dispatch stated a vehicle crashed through the building.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 34-year-old driver from Savoy was practicing driving in a parking lot when they mistakenly pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake.

This resulted in the vehicle colliding with the east side of the building.

Police say, the driver had an Illinois instructional permit to drive.

There were no injuries reported, but the building sustained heavy damage.

Staff with the Illinois Secretary of State’s office was called to assess the damage.
