CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The construction worker killed after being hit by a vehicle on Interstate 74 in Champaign early Wednesday morning has been identified.Â
Illinois State Police were called to I-74 eastbound at milepost 179 at 3:35 a.m.Â
Police said a pickup truck pulling a trailer hit a worker, later identified as 65-year-old Steven A. Cornett of Danville, in an active construction zone.Â
The worker was pronounced dead at the scene.Â
I-74 eastbound will be shut down for several hours while an investigation is underway.Â
I-74 eastbound at the I-57 interchange is being diverted onto I-57 southbound.Â
Drivers on I-57 southbound should use Curtis Road to access Champaign.Â
Those on I-57 northbound can either use Curtis Road or the Market Street exit to reach Champaign.Â
Those traveling from Mahomet to Champaign should find an alternate route and expect delays.Â
