UPDATE 7/8/24 7:15 : Law enforcement confirms the deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the ISP investigation.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Sangamon County Coroner is identifying a Springfield woman who was shot and killed by Sangamon Co. Sheriff's deputies early Saturday morning. 

Police said it happened Saturday around 1:20 a.m. on Hoover Avenue near Hobbs Park.

According to an initial release from the department, deputies were called to the area around 12:50 a.m. for a report of a prowler. 

Deputies searched the area and approximately 30 minutes after arriving reported shots fired.

Sangamon Co. Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Jeff Wilhite said a woman was shot by deputies. They performed first aid until EMS arrived, but the woman later died at the hospital. 

Coroner Jim Allmon identified the woman Monday as Sonya Massey, 36. She was transported home in the 2800 block of South Hoover Ave. to the hospital emergency room, Allmon said. She was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m. Her cause of death was a gunshot wound, Allmon added. 

No deputies were hurt. 

Illinois State Police is conducting an investigation at the request of the sheriff's office.

In an email to ISP Monday morning, ISP Spokesperson Trooper Jayme Bufford said no additional information was available. 

It's not clear who all fired shots or if the woman who was killed was the suspected prowler. WAND News has also not been able to confirm if the woman was armed with a weapon or if she fired any shots. 

The sheriff's office has not identified the deputies involved. 

It's not clear if there is police body camera video of the incident.
