DECATUR, Ill. (WAND)- Neighbors and the Decatur City Council weighed in on the recent CO-2 leak at ADM's facility during Monday night's council meeting.
WAND News learned Friday, a monitoring well corroded and released CO-2 about 500 feet above the storage site.
The EPA is investigating and ADM says groundwater is not at risk.
Last year, the company asked the city for a carbon sequestration easement, ensuring council the project is safe.
Councilman David Horn says he now has serious questions about ADM's operations.
"The city learns- through the media- not ADM, not the US EPA- that there was a CO2 leak through a corroded well, that had not even been in place 10 years. It is also concerning that ADM allegedly did not follow its own emergency response and remediation plan." said Horn.
The EPA did notify the city on August 14th, that it was investigating ADM's carbon capture system, but did not notify the city there was a leak.
