CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - A 22-year-old man is in critical condition following a shooting Wednesday afternoon on Carver Drive, according to Champaign police.
At approximately 2:26 p.m. on Wedensday, METCAD 911 received multiple calls reporting shots fired and a gunshot victim. Due to the location's proximity to the city border, both Champaign and Urbana police officers responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim suffering from a potentially life-threatening injury after being shot. He was treated at the scene and transported to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition following surgery.
Police said the shooting took place in the 1300 block of Carver Drive in Champaign. Police believe that an altercation broke out before shots were fired, after which the other individuals involved fled the area on foot.
The Champaign Police Department has assumed primary responsibility for the ongoing investigation, assisted by the Urbana Police Department, Champaign County Sheriff's Office, and Illinois State Police.
No arrests have been made. Detectives are canvassing the area and encouraging nearby residents or business owners with exterior security cameras to contact the department.
