4 year old recovering after shooting in Champaign apartment

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) -- A four year old is recovering after they were shot in the foot.

Champaign Police said, it happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday inside an apartment near North Neil Street and Walingford Drive.

Police said, when they arrived they found the four year old with a gunshot wound. The child was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Police said the child was in the care of a 17-year-old family member when a firearm was discharged. The 17-year-old was arrested on initial charges including reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The investigation continues, police saying "due to the ages of both the victim and the arrested subject, information that can be publicly shared about this incident is very limited."
