CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) – A shooting in Champaign is now being investigated as a homicide, following the death of a 31-year-old man from his injuries the next day.
Champaign Police responded to the Oakwood Trace Apartments at 3:03 p.m. on Sunday, where they discovered a man with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. He was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries but was reported to be in stable condition following surgery as of Sunday night.
The Champaign County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Anthony Miller, of Champaign, he succumbed to his injuries from the shooting Monday evening around 5:15 p.m.Â
Officers said Zaire Herman shot Miller before running from the scene. They caught up to him nearby and took him into custody. Â
Herman faces initial charges including Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Assault, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Additional charges may be added as the investigation continues.
Police said even though an arrest has been made, the investigation remains ongoing.
