Deputies arrest man accused of Nov. 2024 deadly hit-and-run

MONTICELLO, Ill. (WAND) - Piatt County deputies arrested a man they believed killed a woman.

On February 25, 2025, an arrest warrant was issued for Dustin L. Wiegel, 28, of Monticello. According to the Piatt County Sheriff's Office he hit a woman with his vehicle in November 2024, killing her.

The department said on November 10, 2024 deputies responded to the area of 1900 N. 1300 East Road for a report of a woman hit by a vehicle. When deputies arrived they found Havilah Giannetta, 39, in critical condition.

She was taken to the hospital in Urbana and died.

Deputies arrested Wiegel Tuesday night for Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident Resulting in Death.

Wiegel is being held in the Piatt County Jail.

The Piatt County Sheriff’s Office along with the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, the Champaign County Coroner’s Office, and the Piatt County States’ Attorney’s Office have worked together to investigate this incident.
