ARTHUR, Ill. (WAND) — Police said a man beat a girl and tried to carry her away early Monday morning in Arthur.

According to Arthur police, officers were called out to a business a little after 5:15 a.m. where they met with the victim. The girl said she had been approached by a man from behind and battered by him. He then tried to carry her away on foot, but a woman who witnessed the crime was able to chase him down until he released the girl. After the attempted kidnapping, he ran away.

The victim and witness were able to return to the business and call 911. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Officers found the suspect, Lester M. Raymind, in Lovington and took him into custody. He was brought to the Douglas County Jail on charges of aggravated battery and kidnapping.
