CHEBANSE, Ill. (WAND) – An ISP trooper and a man from Mahomet were taken to the hospital with injuries after a Scott's Law crash near Chebanse, according to Illinois State Police.Â
ISP said a trooper responded to report of debris in the roadway at mile post 302 near Chebanse on Saturday.Â
The trooper pulled over their police car in the right lane with the lights flashing and cleared away the debris. The trooper returned to the car when ISP said Harold McComb, 66, Mahomet, failed to move over and rear-ended the trooper's car.Â
The trooper and McComb were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
McComb was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident and a Scott’s Law violation.Â
Illinois State Police said this is the fourth crash related to the Move Over Law in 2025. In 2024, there were 27 incidents related to the law, resulting in 12 injuries to troopers and one fatality.
Scott's Law was passed in 2002 and requires all drivers to change lanes or reduce their speed when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle displaying emergency or hazard lights. It's also known as the "Move Over Law."
Violators can face fines and license suspensions.
