SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A man was pronounced dead Tuesday after officers found him unresponsive in his cell in the Sangamon County Jail.
According to correctional staff, officers found the 55-year-old man alone and unresponsive in his cell around 8:30 a.m. The staff started CPR and used an AED until medical personnel arrived.
The man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at HSHS St. John’s Hospital.
The Sangamon County Coroner performed an autopsy and found no evidence of injury or trauma.
The cause of death is believed to be natural causes, but it has not yet been finalized and a toxicology report is pending.
The identity of the man is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
The investigation is on-going.
