CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — A 58-year-old man who was hit by a car in the 500 block of North Market Street Tuesday evening has been identified.

Champaign police said officers and firefighters gave medical help to the man at the scene, but he died at the hospital.

The Champaign County coroner identified the victim as James McCammon. He was pronounced dead in the Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department in Urban at 6:26 P.M. on March 4.

When officers arrived, the car was not on scene, so CPD shut down traffic to search for a hit-and-run driver. Around an hour later, 36-year-old Fernando Lorenzo-Raymundo arrived at the Champaign Police Department to speak with officers about his involvement as the driver of the vehicle in the crash.

Lorenzo-Raymundo was issued citations for driving with a suspended license, driving with no insurance, and leaving the scene of a crash before being arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal accident. His vehicle was also impounded.

The 500 block of North Market was closed until around midnight.

The Champaign Police Department asks that residents or nearby businesses with surveillance cameras reach out to the department at 217-351-4545.
