CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND)- A 26-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot multiple times Thursday night in Champaign, according to police.

Officers were called to the area near the 1000 block of Stratford Drive after receiving reports of gunfire around 10:53 p.m. on Thursday. While en route, they received a separate call from an injured man who stated he had been shot. He was found in the 1600 block of Sangamon Drive.

Responding officers diverted to the victim’s location, where they found the 26-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds described as potentially life-threatening. Officers immediately began administering medical aid with assistance from the Champaign Fire Department until paramedics transported the man to a local hospital. He remains in critical condition.

Upon further investigation, Champaign PD said the victim had been in the 900 block of Stratford Drive when one or more unknown individuals opened fire. After being shot, the man reportedly fled the scene in a vehicle while calling for help.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Police say they are actively pursuing all leads and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible.

Police continue to canvass the surrounding neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage that may aid in the investigation. Residents and businesses in the area with exterior security cameras are encouraged to contact the Champaign Police Department.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
