SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Body cam footage released Monday night shows the moment Springfield police pepper-sprayed and arrested a man.

The Springfield Police Department said that officers were on the scene of reports that a man was abusing a dog at 6:45 p.m. Sept. 6 along Yale Boulevard.

The person, later identified as K'Shawn Rush, was noticed by witnesses as "striking and choking" a dog. Springfield PD said witnesses believed the dog was stolen and Rush was attempting to use the dog to "threaten or intimidate" those around him.

Springfield police arrived to find Rush lying in the yard with the dog. Rush was said to be given clear commands, but he ignored them and tried to leave with the dog.

The situation escalated when Rush was captured on camera physically attacking his girlfriend, who tried taking the dog from him.

Springfield PD said later, Rush was told that he was under arrest and he refused, getting physical with officers, hitting them and began removing equipment from their vests.

Springfield police said pepper spray and "empty-hand techniques" were used to restrain Rush to prevent further harm.

Rush was eventually handcuffed and taken into custody following the initial resistance.

Body cam footage additionally shows the officer then trying to use a catch pole to take the dog.

Rush was arrested on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including aggravated battery to a police officer, domestic battery, resisting arrest and cruelty to animals.

The full body cam footage is available on Springfield PD's transparency page.
