DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Decatur City Council discussed the fate of a former YWCA building on Monday night.
The owners of the crumbling building, located on N. Main, have refused to close the building and remove the asbestos according to outgoing City Manager Scot Wrighton. He suggested that council pass an abatement to remove the asbestos.

During the meeting, Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe expressed annoyance over the city having to step in to take care of the property.
"This is a lot of money for a privately owned piece of property that — you know — is now somehow becoming our problem. "
Despite concerns from council members, the contract for abatement was passed unanimously. The city will seek legal remedies to get compensation for the taxpayer-funded clean up, which will cost around $250,000.
