DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A Decatur Subway location has been closed by the Macon County Health Department due to a cockroach infestation.
The health department reports live cockroaches were found in multiple areas of the restaurant, including in the lobby and food prep areas.
Health inspectors first visited the Subway at 1621 E. Eldorado on August 29. Cockroaches were found under the front prep line. Subway was ordered to contact pest management to perform control measures.
Inspectors also found a leaking faucet that needed to be repaired and employee items being stored above food in a walk-in cooler.
The inspection came after complaints were called in about cockroaches being in the lobby, under the prep area and the back counter.
An employee reported the infestation to a manager after a cockroach crawled out of their purse when they came home from working. A customer reported seeing cockroaches crawling on the menu board.
The last pest service had been performed August 6, with service occurring every two weeks.
A follow up inspection was performed on September 5. Management showed proof of pest services visiting two times in the past month. The location had been given five business days to provide proof of effective pest control services.
During the follow up visit, inspectors saw "significant" cockroach activity in multiple areas including the serving line, food preparation, food storage, beverage dispenser, and dining areas. They found evidence of active breeding "resulting from an ineffective pest control program."
The Macon County Health Department said it has received multiple complaints about the location and the business permit for the location has been suspended "due to imminent health hazard."
The health department gave Subway the following steps to follow before they will be allowed to re-open the location:
- Eliminate cockroaches and provide proof of effective pest control program
- After treatments occur, all exposed food/non-food contact surfaces must be cleaned/sanitized
- Submit concrete action plan that details measures taken to resolve/prevent issue to be reviewed by Director/Assistant Director of environmental health
- Payment of $250 for re-opening inspection
- After requirements are met, contact Macon County Health Department for next steps
The location remains closed as of September 10.
