SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — A shooting investigation is underway in Springfield.

Springfield Police say officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2100 block of South 15th Street just after 1 a.m. Sunday. 

When officers arrived they found two men who had been shot.

They were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover. 

The men directed officers to a home where there were shell casings in the yard. 

Police say, officers attempted to make contact but, the people inside were uncooperative and barricaded the door. 

Springfield PD Emergency Response Team and Crisis Response Team members worked to establish communication with the people inside the home. 

Police say, after an long period of communication, a person inside the home shot at officers. The gunshots hit a rescue vehicle that several police officers were in. 

After additional shots were fired in the direction of the officers an officer returned fire. 

One person came out of the home and told officers one man inside the home had been shot. 

He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. 

Police say, no officers were injured. 

Illinois State Police will do an independent investigation on the shots fired by the officer.
