DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — During Tuesday night's Decatur Public School board meeting, the Board of Education received an update on the district's initiative to use expulsions as a means to address fights.

Superintendent Dr. Rochelle Clark reported that, despite increased security measures and resources, physical violence had escalated at DPS61 schools over the past two school years.

"Its not just the central administration and the principals- its the teachers, the TAs, the bus drivers, the security- its everyone. We're all wanting to do what's best for kids. We're trying to intervene as quickly as possible before it gets to that point," said Dr. Clark.

During the 2023-2024 school year, the board expelled 42 students, while 22 students were expelled in the 2024-2025 school year

Dr. Clark emphasized that these actions by the administration are helping to turn the tide and create a safer environment for both students and staff.
