NEOGA, Ill. (WAND) — Wednesday morning began with a drizzle, a sunrise, and the sounds of footsteps walking up to Neoga Elementary School's main entrance.
When asked what he was doing today, second grader Kolesyn Guingon replied, "Going back to school!"
After almost two weeks since a devastating tornado struck the Neoga schools campuses, students are returning back to the classroom.
"I didn't even know if we we were going to be able to go back! The roof got ripped off," said sixth grader, Quincy Taylor.
Temporary repairs have been made to the elementary school's west gym wall, the school entrance, and roof. The school welcomed Pre-K through Junior High students into the building this morning.
Repairs at Junior and Senior high have stopped for further assessment. High schoolers started their day of classes in the Community Center.
"I'm excited, I miss my students," shared Junior High ELA teacher Shari Fearday. "I miss teaching, and I love what I do."
Many worked tirelessly to make repairs so students could return safely to the Elementary School. It's clear, these kids missed being there.
"I miss math," Guingon said.
"I miss the musical," shared sophomore, Lily Turner. "I hope we remember out parts!"
As staff navigates having a high volume of students in the building, one thing is for sure: Everyone is safe, and excited.
Parent Paula Turner dropped her kids off this morning. With a smile, she said, "We're okay, our kids are safe, and that's the most important part."
