SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Springfield School District 186 Board of Education has unanimously approved the renewal of the district’s e-learning program, allowing students to continue learning remotely during inclement weather.
The program is used on days when weather conditions make it unsafe to hold in-person classes. Instead of canceling school entirely, students participate in lessons from home, helping the district avoid adding makeup days to the end of the school year.
District officials say the e-learning approach has provided flexibility for families while ensuring instructional time is not lost during severe weather events.
The board approved the renewal for an additional three years, extending the program through the end of the 2027–2028 school year.
District leaders said the continued use of e-learning will help maintain consistency in instruction while giving the district tools to respond to unpredictable winter weather.
