Decatur – It’s difficult to win an election as an independent. It’s even more difficult to get on the ballot. Then add rain.
Dr. David Gill, an emergency department physician at Gibson Area Hospital in Gibson City, is attempting to run for Congress as an independent candidate. He ran as a Democrat in 2012 against Republican Rodney Davis losing in a close race. He is attempting once again in an effort to unseat Davis.
On his Facebook page, “Gill For You”, Gill says he needs 120 signatures every day in order to have enough to get on the November ballot. But Gill admits frequent spring rains have slowed that effort.
Gill is now offering to pay volunteers to obtain signatures. “Join our campaign and make $15 to $30 an hour” reads a post this week on the Facebook site. Gill states with “relative ease” volunteers can collect 15 to 30 signatures an hour. He adds he will pay signature gatherers $1 for every valid signature.
Gills campaign claims he has collected “thousands of signatures” over the past 6 weeks.
