EFFINGHAM - HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital is encouraging central Illinois residents who smoke to participate in the American Cancer Society's "Great American Smokeout" on November 17.
The nationwide event is hosted by the American Cancer Society on the third Thursday of November each year, and aims to help smokers quit, lowering their risk for developing cancer in the process.
As part of this effort, HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital is hosting a smoking cessation program in January, and is also offering lung cancer screenings. Â
The smoking cessation program will be held on Tuesdays, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., starting January 3. Preregistration is required, and there is a $20 registration fee for the program, which will be refunded upon completing the program.
Officials say lung cancer screenings may benefit individuals who have smoked at least a pack a day for 30 years, or two packs a day for 15 years, and are currently smoking, or have quit smoking within the past 15 years. The screening costs $175, and includes a non-invasive CT scan.
