Human remains found in wooded area in Springfield identified

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Human remains found in a wooded area in Springfield Thursday have been identified. 

The Sangamon County coroner identified the human remains found on July 3 in a wooded area near Wabash Ave. and South Macarthur Blvd. as Derek Wartenbe, 37, of Auburn.

Preliminary autopsy findings showed no evidence of injury of trauma.

The official cause of death is pending additional studies.

The death remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Coroner and the Springfield Police Department.
