SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Interstate 55 South reopened around noon Tuesday after a crash that left two people dead, including an eight-year-old girl. 

Illinois State Police troopers were called at 6:40 a.m. to I-55 south near the Interstate 72 split, milepost 92. 

ISP said a passenger vehicle hit the back of a semi truck.

Two people, a 37-year-old Riverton woman and her eight-year-old daughter, were killed in the crash, according to the Sangamon County Coroner's Office.

Their identities will not be released by the coroner until the family is notified. 

The North Mac School District did share a post on Facebook identifying the child as a student of the district. The district will have counselors on hand for anyone who needs support. 

The crash is under investigation.
