CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — With July 4th approaching, the Champaign fire and police departments are encouraging firework safety.

The city of Champaign says fireworks cause over 30,000 fires per year, and children under 15 account for over a quarter of estimated firework injuries.

Most fireworks are illegal in Champaign, but "legal fireworks" like sparklers are allowed.

Fireworks should be used outside and away from homes, people and flammable substances. Having a bucket of water and a fire extinguisher nearby is recommended in case of emergency.

The city says the best way to prevent firework injuries is by attending public firework displays and leaving it to professionals.
