DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The City of Decatur is planning a prescribed burn this week at its sediment storage basin east of Lake Decatur near Oakley. The burn is expected to take place the week of March 23 and March 24, depending on weather conditions.
City officials say the controlled burn will be conducted by trained professionals and is aimed at reducing invasive plant species and lowering the risk of future wildfires. Crews will take precautions to ensure safety and limit smoke from drifting into nearby homes, roadways, and other sensitive areas.
Officials emphasized there are no hazardous materials at the site and residents should not be concerned.
The property, located at 6705 Angle Crossing Road in Oakley, is owned by the City of Decatur.
The burn complies with City Code Chapter 48 regarding native plantings and controlled burns, as well as regulations from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency under an approved open burning permit.
Local authorities and fire officials have been notified of the planned burn. City officials say the operation will only move forward if weather conditions are favorable.
