Marcina Fuller began Reflective Girls, an organization helping teens and young adults get a head start in the workforce, after years of working in Decatur Public Schools.

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A new organization in Decatur is helping teens and young adults get a head start in the workforce. Marcina Fuller began Reflective Girls after years of working in Decatur Public Schools.

"I've been teaching in the district for about 15 years," Fuller said. "I subbed some and then became a teacher. And I hear the cries of the parents, the students, when things don't work out the way they do. So sometimes those cries keep me up at night. So I was like, okay, what can I do about this?" 

Fuller considers the organization her ministry and a chance to help teens figure out who they are. This includes education on life skills and formulating their identity. 

Fuller also wanted to ensure students knew what options were available to them after they graduated high school. 

"Reflective Girls is a leadership program for youth, and we bring industries to youth," Fuller said. "We take you also to the industries so that youth can develop ... first we build them from within and let them know who they are. And then we teach them real-life skills." 

Fuller is kick-starting that goal by hosting a cookout event where families can connect with local companies. Banks, hospitals, government agencies and other groups will be present to help students learn about job options. 

The cookout is also a chance for the community to learn more about Reflective Girls and their mission. The organization is looking for volunteers for the program and businesses interested in getting involved. 

The Reflective Girls cookout is happening this Saturday at Hess Park. The event will run from noon to 9 p.m. with vendors and community partners.
