DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The federal government's SNAP cuts are making things hard for central Illinois families.

Local food banks and nonprofit organizations are dealing with more people coming in for food.

Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski said the impact on families is devastating.

"The reality is, in communities like Decatur, Urbana, Champaign, Monticello, there are more children now [who] are going to be going to bed hungry because those SNAP benefits have been cut," Budzinski said.

Food banks are seeing a surge in demand that they have never experienced before.

Good Samaritan Inn Executive Director Tanya Melendez shared that the organization served a record number of people in June.

"Some days we hit and came really close to 300 people," Melendez said. "So, it has definitely impacted our community."
