CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) — With just a month until the March primary election, the NAACP hosted a forum for the democratic candidates running to replace  U.S. Senator Dick Durbin Sunday.

NAACP President Theodis Pace says this forum is essential for voters to make sure their voices are heard.

"Our concentration is also on the importance of the midterm election, dealing with the strengthening of a democracy, voting rights, inequities, health disparities, and education" said Pace.

U.S. Representatives Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Lieutenant Governor Julianna Stratton addressed a range of topics, including the economy, healthcare and civil rights.

Each candidate emphasized their experience in public service and outlined how they would approach challenges facing constituents.

"We can raise the minimum wage, which has been $7.25 on the federal level for way too long, so we can invest in economic development and economic growth," said Rep. Kelly. "I'm not afraid to stand up, show up, or speak up. I've done it many times."

While candidates shared similar priorities, each highlighted different approaches they said set them apart in the race.

"I'm still pursuing that mission statement given to me by my parents — to make sure this country is there for the next families who need it. I want to make sure that the American dream that we were privileged to attain is available to everybody, regardless of the color of your skin, regardless of how you pray or whom you love, and regardless of the number of letters in your name," said Rep. Krishnamoorthi.

Stratton talked about her work in state government and her focus on economic opportunity and equity initiatives.

"Everything that we care about is being threatened, and we need real fighters in Washington. I came here this afternoon to tell you that I am that fighter. I will fight to make life more affordable," said Lieutenant Gov. Stratton.

Forum organizers said the goal was to help voters become more civically engaged and make an informed decision at the polls.
