SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Over 7,000 City Water, Light and Power customers are without power Saturday after severe thunderstorms passed through the area.

The utility company said lightning strikes, wind and heavy rains toppled trees, power poles and power lines, causing power to go out for 7,330 customers in 13 areas across the city's center and northwest of Lake Springfield.

According to CWLP, crews are assessing damage and addressing downed lines where safety concerns are a priority. The company said power will be restored to the largest groups of customers as quickly and safely as possible.

Major outage areas include:

  • South Grand Avenue to W. Stanford Avenue between Taylor Avenue and Veterans Parkway approximately
  • GlenAire and Laketown areas near the Stevenson Drive I-72
  • E. Hazel Dell Lane

CWLP said any downed wires should always be considered energized and potentially dangerous, and recommended that residents stay away, warn others to stay away, and call to report at 217-789-2121.
