SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - A county board seat is up for grabs in Shelby County after District 7 Representative Sonny Ross announced his resignation.
The Shelby County Board officially announced the vacancy Thursday night.
Ross was embroiled in the battle over the county dive team in 2023, resulting in the entire team resigning ahead of the Lake Shelbyville summer season.
Ross made a public apology to the dive team and the county at a board meeting in November.
"I apologize first to the citizens of Shelby County and the visitors for my failure. I apologize to the members of both entities for the undue stress, aggravation and uncertainty that was caused by my actions," Ross said.
His term was set to run through 2026.
