SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - Tuesday night the Springfield City Council approved a plan to install 40 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at nine different locations.

The city received a $629,000 grant for community charging and fueling infrastructure. Additionally, CWLP (City Water, Light and Power) will contribute $110,000.

Now, the city must determine how much to charge drivers for using the charging stations.

Doug Brown, Chief Utility Engineer for CWLP, stated, "We need to develop a final rate structure for what we will charge users. This is something we will likely present back to the council as an ordinance for approval. Our rates will be lower than those of typical charging stations."

Construction on the "Level 2" chargers is expected to begin in August and should be completed by next year.
