SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - St. John's Hospital in Springfield became the first hospital in the HSHS System to earn the federal Energy Star certification.Â
According to HSHS, buildings must earn a 75 or higher on the Environmental Protection Agency's 1-100 scale to get the certification.Â
St John's scored a 77 for its campus.Â
HSHS said St. John's has saved nearly $1 million in energy costs over the past three years.Â
Upgrades to St. John's have included installing LED light bulbs campus-wide and installing technology to monitor its ventilation, heating and air conditioning systems.Â
"Hospitals operate around the clock, making this certification all the more significant. Our team is proud to deliver improvements that support sustainability while keeping every patient room, operating suite and clinical space running safely and reliably," said St. John's Director of Facilities Management, Nick Bristow, in a statement.
