TILTON, Ill. (WAND) - The Tilton community honored its former chief of police on Friday morning after he was hit and killed on the job earlier this week.

Steven Cornett, 65, was a construction worker who was killed in a crash while working on Interstate 74 in Champaign Wednesday. 

Cornett served as Tilton's chief of police from 2010-17.

First responders formed a large procession to escort Cornett's body back to Tilton, as dozens of families lined the route to pay tribute.

Illinois State Police arrested 29-year-old Quamaine Fletcher in connection with Cornett's death.

Fletcher was charged with reckless homicide in the crash and was granted pretrial release on Friday.
