DANVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — A number of probationary staff have been dismissed from their roles at the VA Illiana Health Care System.

The cuts mirror federal layoffs across agencies like Health and Human Services, Education, Energy, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Park Service.

The Trump administration has stood by the downsizing as an effort to reduce federal government.

“The probationary period is a continuation of the job application process, not an entitlement for permanent employment,” said McLaurine Pinover, a spokesperson for the Office of Personnel Management told the Associated Press.

“VA Illiana Health Care System has dismissed a small number of probationary staff this month," said a representative in a statement. "This decision will have no negative effect on Veteran health care, benefits or other services and will allow VA to focus more effectively on its core mission of serving Veterans, families, caregivers, and survivors. We cannot discuss specific personnel matters due to privacy concerns.”
