CARLINVILLE, Ill. (WAND) — A Carlinville patrol officer shot a person wielding a gun outside Carlinville Area Hospital, according to Illinois State Police.

On Sunday, a Carlinville officer conducted a traffic stop of a stolen vehicle outside of the hospital in the 20700 block of North Broad St. at 6:15 p.m.

During the stop, ISP said the suspect in the vehicle pointed a firearm at the Carlinville officer. The officer fired his service weapon, striking the suspect.

The suspect was flown to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries. The officer was not injured. 

No additional information is being released at this time. 

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
