(WAND) — Illinois State Police will attend National Police Week in Washington D.C. to honor two ISP troopers who were killed last year.
Troopers Corey Thompsen and Clay Carns died after traffic accidents while on duty. They will be honored throughout the week at events like a candlelight vigil and the National Memorial Service.
The events are open to the public and allow families, friends and coworkers to mourn and honor their loved ones sacrifice.
"It takes a special kind of person to be willing to walk out their front door every day, knowing it could be their last, and doing it anyway," said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly.
National Police Week is from May 11-17. It serves as a time to remember officers who died in the line of duty, honor current and former officers, and offer support to officers and their families.
